3D: Sculpture36.750215,139.5994898-10 Yasukawa-cho, Nikko-shi, Tochigi 321-1432This exhibition, organized by Tam Ochiai, takes its title from a fragment of an Emily Dickinson poem. Eastman’s work is inter-disciplinary and her practice extends beyond art-making to include the Troedsson Villa Project, where in addition to inviting artists to reside and make work in Nikko, she organizes exhibitions and workshops in collaboration with members of the art community in Japan. Her exhibition will begin at HIGURE17-15cas, Tokyo with a video work and several small sculptural pieces combining fragments of newspaper with paint, wood, glass and mirror and continue in Nikko, where she applies a similar approach to a site specific installation at Tetsuo’s Garage, an alternative art space she started in 2017. The show in Nikko will also incorporate events and screenings organized ad hoc. Geocentric theory was superseded by Heliocentric theory, yet the Sun continued setting and rising; this exhibition represents a kind of realism, signboard, and the limits of nostalgia. These islands had different languages and cultures, but the invasion significantly altered their respective societies, and this ultimately led to the definition of Japan’s current borders. The National Museum of Japanese History has been conducting various joint research activities in this field since 2015, and museum visitors can see the research results in this exhibition. In addition, they can discover a new historical image of Ryukyu, based on more than 400 historical artifacts, such as celadon porcelain, white porcelain, national treasure documents, temple bells of important cultural assets, folding-screen paintings, and drawings. 2D: Graphics35.167964,138.878769347-1 Clematis no Oka, Sunto-gun, Nagaizumi-cho, Shizuoka 411-0931Katsumi Komagata (b. 1953) is a designer and bookmaker known for titles such as “Little Eyes” and “Little Tree.” Having studied with graphic designer Kasumasa Nagai, Komagata began his career at the Japan Design Center before moving the U.S. and working in New York as a graphic designer. He returned to Japan in 1983, designing record jackets, invitations for fashion brands, and other creations. The birth of his daughter in 1989 launched his career in picture books. With their simple yet rich explorations of the possibilities of communication, these works attracted attention around the world. From the late 1990s, Komagata began conducting workshops, creating picture books for people with visual and hearing disabilities, and engaging in projects for minorities. This exhibition surveys Komagata’s career from his experimental period in the U.S. to his designs for music and fashion, as well as his idea sketches for picture books revealing his process. 2D: Nihonga35.106057,139.07842526-2 Momoyama-cho, Atami-shi, Shizuoka 413-8511A seventeenth-century artist, Iwasa Matabei (1578–1650, aka Katsumochi), enjoyed a successful career as a painter, famous for his characteristic drawing of people with roundish, elongated heads and the unique combination of Japanese and Chinese painting styles. Dubbed “Ukiyo-Matabei,” he was regarded as the father of the ukiyoe culture that flourished later. However, he was also an elusive figure despite his popularity. Themes for his paintings were wide, from Chinese and Japanese literary classics to contemporary genre paintings. In particular, his works of scrolls illustrating “joruri” puppet plays with scripts. This exhibition offers an opportunity to view three of the most renowned joruri illustrated scrolls: The tales of Yoamanaka Tokiwa, of Princess Joruri, and of Horie. Rist’s video installations, consisting of comforting, sensorially stimulating music, and humorous snatches of images depicting a realm of vivid color, have charmed viewers of all ages throughout the world. The exhibition is made of some 40 works, dealing with themes such as the body, women, nature, and ecology. Functioning as a complete overview of Rist’s approximately 30-year career, the retrospective encompasses everything from the artist’s early short videos focusing on the female body and identity; a major work that was presented at the Venice Biennale; a recent large-scale video installation, which gently extols a symbiosis between nature and humans using state-of-the-art video techniques; a new work that incorporates pieces from the museum collection; and an outdoor work fashioned out of recycled materials. With playful and immersive video experiences, which enable the viewer to relax on a bed and sit around a dining table, the exhibition restructures the relationship between the viewer and the museum in the era of the coronavirus, while also gradually unraveling pressing themes in contemporary society by means of the viewer’s body. Yamauchi depicts “small lives” at the mercy of times in her paintings. She creates complex matière by painting the surface through the repetition of various processes: applying multiple layers of sumi ink and paint onto Japanese paper and occasionally wiping off the painted surface, washing it away, and scraping it off with sandpaper. 2D: Painting36.376622,140.4684611-6-8 Goken-cho, Mito-shi, Ibaraki 310-0063In response to the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011, Contemporary Art Center, Art Tower Mito, which itself suffered damage from the disaster, organized an exhibition entitled “Artists and the Disaster: Documentation in Progress” in 2012. The exhibition chronologically introduced diverse activities which artists have conducted following the disaster, irrespective of whether it was meant to be “art” or not. Back then, soon after the massive catastrophe and amid questioning about the role of art, a majority of activities by the artists focused on support and documentation. Having had time for reflection since then, the artists started responding through “artworks,” as a result of gazing at realities that the disaster brought about. Held for the tenth anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, the exhibition will re-explore the catastrophe through art. It is because one of the problems the disaster has laid bare is our “lack of imagination.” In spite of the fact that our ancestors left us cautionary stone monuments and folklores, in many cases of March 11th, we did not recognize the true danger of the tsunami. So, let us now recall that art is supposed to be good at evoking imagination. As the Great East Japan Earthquake is already becoming something of the “past,” the exhibition focuses on this nature of art: arousing imagination, introducing artworks that reconnect us to the disaster. In so doing, “Artists and the Disaster: Imagining in the 10th Year” aims to pass stories down to the generation of people who were still very young when it occurred, those of us marking the tenth anniversary, and those in future generations.
